Black Wood

これはジャガイモの絵を描いたこどもの話。ジャガイモを黒く塗ったら、先生に、ジャガイモは茶色ですと言われて泣いた。 Black dog、Black bird、Black cow アンデスには黒いトウモロコシやジャガイモ。 黒い花なんかもどこかにあるんだろう。 それらはたいてい美しい。 肌色という色はない。

稀に黒い模様が現れる柿の木を黒柿と呼びます。きれいな黒い模様は、柿の木１万本に対して１本の割合で現れると言われています。樹木の中のタンニンが酸化して黒くなるのか、微生物が酵素を分泌して変色させるのか、なぜ黒くなるのかはまだはっきりとは分かっていないそうです。さらに黒柿は材を乾燥させるのが非常に難しく、通常のやり方で乾燥させると割れてしまうので、水中でゆっくりと乾燥させます。黒柿は世界でも類を見ない、銘木中の銘木です。 もうひとつはアフリカの黒い木です。アフリカンブラックウッドと呼ばれるこの木は、気乾密度1.1～1.3 g/cm³と非常に重く水に沈みます。重く緻密な材質による音響特性から、クラリネットやオーボエの木管楽器に主に使用されています。楽器業界ではグラナディラと呼ばれます。この木も乱伐を阻止しなければならない、大切に扱わなくてはならない木のひとつです。
